People travel overseas as many have their children and families living in different countries including the US whom they visit, people also travel for their education and skill development, career prospects and work, last but not the least, people travel on vacations to explore new lands.

Travel Insurance or travel health Insurance or Visitor Health Insurance is very important along with other important items one might consider. When it comes to travel insurance the health insurance that you might have in your home country is not of any use while outside your home country.

For international travel, especially while traveling to the United States there are many popular travel insurance plans made available by private insurance companies. You need to consider some vital factors before buying visitor insurance. Some among them are 2 kinds of travel insurance plans namely Fixed and Comprehensive visitor insurance .

Let's focus on a comprehensive plan that is very popular and suitable for many visitors visiting the US. Atlas America travel insurance is a comprehensive visitor health insurance plan from the company WorldTrips. This plan is an ideal plan for parents visiting US or visitors visiting US. This plan offers policy maximum coverage for acute.

onset of pre-existing conditions visitor insurance for people below the age of 80. This plan is the only visitor plan that offers coverage for pregnancy complications for a pregnant woman visiting US for a short term. This pregnancy complication coverage is available only up to 26 weeks of pregnancy after which pregnancy is treated as pre-existing condition.

This plan has another major bonus that it does not charge the premium for a child who is under 10 years of age when the child is accompanied by an adult. This provision is available for only one child accompanied with one adult.

Apart from these this plan does not have any arrival time restriction which makes it perfect for people who are living in US for a while on their work Visa like H1B or on OPT status while they are without any insurance temporarily during changing jobs or visiting US on an official purpose occasionally. This is how Atlas America insurance plan works, it has a 20% co insurance applicable after the deductible while paying the expenses.

This co insurance quotient is applicable only to the first $5,000 of the expense. If you happen to visit a provider within their PPO network which is United HealthCare, then this co insurance is waived and 100% of the expense after the deductible is paid by the insurance company. All these features of Atlas America travel insurance plan make it very attractive.

Pre-existing conditions coverage - FAQ's

01. What does "acute onset of pre-existing conditions" mean?

The "Acute Onset of a Pre-Existing Condition" is a sudden and unexpected outbreak or recurrence of a pre-existing medical condition which occurs without any advance warning either in the form of physician recommendations or symptoms and requires immediate care (within 24 hours of first symptoms).

A Pre-Existing Condition that is a chronic or congenital condition or that gradually becomes worse over time will not be considered acute onset. The acute onset coverage benefit does not include coverage for known, scheduled, required, or expected medical care, drugs or treatment existent or necessary prior to the effective date of coverage. An example of this might be someone who has a food allergy or bee allergy and is unknowingly exposed to their allergen and requires immediate medical attention.

02. Do WorldTrips travel insurance plans really cover pre-existing conditions?

Yes. Atlas Travel Insurance from WorldTrips offers Acute onset of a pre-existing condition covers up to overall maximum limit, under age 80 for visitors to the US.

Visitor Secure insurance for visitors to USA offers coverage up to chosen plan maximum for acute onset of pre-existing conditions.

03. What is the difference between Full Pre-Existing & Acute Onset Insurance?

Acute onset of a pre-existing condition can be defined as the sudden & unexpected occurrence of a pre-existing condition which requires in-patient, emergency hospitalization within 24 hours of exhibiting first symptoms. The main difference between acute onset & full pre-existing is that with Full Pre-Existing coverage, is that one is covered for all pre-existing conditions and associated medical costs and this includes follow up visits, hospitalizations and doctor’s visits, etc. The acute onset coverage will only cover the in-patient hospitalization expense.

04. How do I know if my pre-existing condition is covered by travel insurance?

Some US travel insurance plans offer coverage for "acute onset" of pre-existing conditions. They however exclude emergencies due to chronic illness because they will say that is not "acute" it is simply a worsening of your condition. The WorldTrips’s Atlas America policy offers temporary medical insurance with coverage for acute onset of pre-existing conditions.

Worldtrips defines pre-existing conditions in the following way: A pre-existing condition is a condition for which the insured received treatment or took medication for in the previous 12 months before the start of the policy. If the medication dosage has not changed and is taken as a maintenance medication, this would NOT count as a flare up or treatment of the condition. In that case, very stable conditions that have no flare ups in the past 12 months are not even excluded as pre-existing conditions. Conditions that have had flare ups or doctor recommended treatment or change in medication, are still covered by the plans but with a higher deductible and a lower maximum.

WorldTrips’s Atlas America and Atlas Premium insurance are comprehensive plans. These plans will offers Acute on set of Pre-existing conditions up to overall maximum limit, under age 80. Another option from WorldTrips Visitor Secure is a fixed plan offers Acute on set of Pre-existing conditions up to overall maximum limit, under age 70.

These Acute on set of pre-existing condition excludes the following conditions

  • Traveler must not be traveling against the recommendations of established treatment programs, or medical advice of a physician or other healthcare provider.
  • You must not be traveling with the intent or purpose to seek or obtain treatment for the pre-existing condition.
