questionHi,
Do you have travel insurance for Covid-19 testing?
Thanks,
Elaine

questionDear Elaine,

Thank you for contacting us for Covid19 travel insurance! We strive to provide the best and most options for international travelers. In that light, we have recently added this policy by Trawick International. It is unique in being a primary health insurance, meaning it will pay out benefits before home country coverage or other health insurance. Insurance with pre existing conditions also offers coverage for "acute onset" of pre-existing conditions for up to $1000 for persons over 70 and under 90 years of age.

The policy is available from any state in the US or can be purchased from abroad. There is also a co-pay of only $30 if you use urgent care (unless you choose a $0 deductible, then there is no copay either). If you are needing testing or treatment for COVID-19, the company wants you to pre-certify with them (that is, you call them before you seek testing or treatment)!

This plan will cost about $1206 for coverage from June 23 to Dec 31 with a maximum of $500,000 and a deductible of $250.
Do let us know if you have any further questions or concerns by email or phone. We are more than happy to assist you!

We wish you and yours safe and happy travels!

questionHi,

I want a travel insurance for Covid19 and any other pre-existing conditions.
Thanks,
Zuzanna

questionDear Zuzanna,

I finally got word back from INF. The CDC update has NO bearing on their coverage of COVID-19. They will still cover it as any other illness (unless you are already sick, of course). There are two comprehensive options available from them. You can compare INF Premier and INF Elite Short term insurance.

Another option is to get coverage only for "acute onset" of pre-existing conditions, which is less expensive. That plan offered by INF is called INF Premier. Like the Elite plan above coverage is available up to $150,000 for persons under 70 years and $100,000 for those 70 to 99 years of age. Persons under 70 years can choose between a $250 or $75 deductible, with other clients choices of $250 or $500 deductible. The Premier plan has a fixed pre-existing condition maximum limit up to which the pre-existing condition would be covered. With the Premier plan, you must choose the deductible for the pre-existing condition coverage and that determines the maximum coverage for acute onset of pre-existing conditions (the higher the deductible, the higher the maximum you are allowed).

questionHi,
Is there any plan for diabetes treatment?
Thanks,
Lini

questionDear Lini,

The only treatment available for pre-existing medical conditions is for "acute onset" of those conditions. So, some visitors insurance for pre-existing conditions will cover unexpected emergencies which may arise from a pre-existing condition, but you will have to pay for regular, required treatment or medication out of your pocket (the insurance will not cover it).

questionHi,

Planning on travelling to the US in may for a week and looking at travel insurance says about $500 for my partner with a UK to USA policy, just wondering how exactly the US policy works that's saying around $50 for the week that we're there? I don't see any information about pre-existing medical conditions declarations etc, so I'm just wondering how it covers those conditions while we are there and what happens if something does happen? for example if she had to go to the hospital for an epilepsy episode? does the policy cover it? cause it doesn't state anything about the medical conditions to declare so I'm a bit worried about purchasing and want to find out as much information as I can.

Thanks,

So, please see the list of exclusions in the plan brochure that is available in the plan details webpage. Before giving the details on the Visitors Care Heart Care plus plan, I would like to walk you through the plans that are popular for their pre existing condition coverage. questionHello,

I want to know the details of the Visitors Secure Plan A health insurance for visitors. In particular the exclusions per pre-existing disease as mentioned in the final check list page.

Thanks,
Dr. Akhtar

questionDear Akhtar,

The coverage for pre-existing conditions can be very confusing. It is confusing because the plan, technically, does NOT cover pre-existing conditions. That is, if there are required regular treatments or medications that are needed for a pre-existing medical conditions, these is NOT covered. However, if a person is under 70 years of age, you can have coverage for what is called "acute onset" of a pre-existing condition. For plan A, the amount covered for that would be up to $50,000. The emergency situation would be covered in the same way that any other condition is covered (it is a fixed plan, so each medical expense has a set limit that will be paid out by the insurance company and you will have to pay the difference for each). Notice that plan B, covers up to $75,000 (the same as the maximum of the plan) and plans C and D cover up to only $100,000 maximum).

You may wonder what is considered "acute onset" as opposed to any other expression of the pre-existing condition. Well, the "acute onset" clause of the plan is meant to cover a condition that is well regulated by medication and/or treatment or any other reasonable means, but the insured has an unexpected and acute emergency due to that condition that threatens their life or overall wellbeing (maybe their life is not in danger, but they may go blind or lose a limb -- that would also count). It must be "acute" in the sense that the situation cannot wait until you return home to take care of the situation.

Note that this coverage is only available for persons under 70 years of age. If the person purchases the policy at age 69 and hits their birthday during the trip, they do lose this additional coverage when they are 70 years (although they get to pay as a 69 year old for the whole trip).
I hope this clarifies the coverage on the Visitor's Secure plan offered by WorldTrips. Do let us know if you have any other question or concerns.

questionHello,

I'm booking travel insurance for my dad, from UK to USA, Aug 30- Sep 8. Is there a list of pre-existing conditions and time limits? He takes pills for high blood pressure.

Thanks,
Samantha

questionDear Samantha

Thank you for your inquiry and allowing us at American Visitor Insurance to help you with your insurance needs. We offer several visitors insurance options for acute onset of pre-existing conditions to individuals that are specifically worried about coverage of pre-existing conditions. Coverage for pre-existing conditions is limited to what is called an "acute onset" of a pre-existing condition, however we have identified the plans that have some coverage for preexisting conditions for individuals traveling out of their home country. Please note that some diseases are excluded from coverage like HIV and cancer, so consult the list of exclusions of the plans to be sure your condition is not excluded. There are no specific list of diseases that are covered. High blood pressure is not a condition that is excluded. You can compare quotes offered by the different pre-existing coverage plans at - Compare pre-existing insurance plans.

1. Atlas Travel:
An excellent option is found in the Atlas America/International plan. They cover the pre-existing condition up to the maximum of the plan that you choose which can be up to $1,000,000 maximum. questionHi,

Hi looking for a travel insurance for an 83 year old female traveling from the Philippines to USA from June 23 to July 14. I am looking for a plan that also covers pre-existing conditions.

Thank you,
Katriz

questionDear Katriz,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance! We are always striving to provide the best and most options for international travelers. In that light, we have recently added this policy by Trawick International. It is unique in offering coverage for "acute onset" of pre-existing conditions for up to $25,000 for persons over 70 and under 90 years of age. The price of the policy for younger travelers makes it an economical option for coverage of acute onset of pre-existing conditions up to the medical maximum for those under 70 years. The policy is available from any state in the US or can be purchased from abroad. This plan will cost you about $330 with a $50,000 maximum and a $250 deductible (you can choose higher deductible and it will cost you less) for the dates of your trip.
Safe Travels USA Comprehensive:

Another option is the fixed plan offered by this same company. It is called Safe Travels USA Diamond and can be purchased for up to $50,000 and has the same limitations on coverage as above for the comprehensive plan, but remember that it is a fixed option and so has caps on individual medical expenses (as well as the maximums listed above). However, offers the best fixed coverage for acute onset of pre-existing conditions for persons over 70.This plan will cost about $112 for the same dates with a maximum of $50,000 and a deductible of Safe Travels visitors to USA Diamond:

INF Elite network:
This plan is a fixed plan and provides full pre existing condition coverage up to age 99.The Elite plan has a fixed pre-existing condition maximum limit up to which the pre-existing condition would be covered.

Here you can compare the INF pre existing condition coverage plans:Compare INF Pre-existing Condition Travel Plans.

questionHi,

Can you please explain further the difference between fixed and comprehensive? And is this the best plan you got for 83 year old female traveling from the Philippines to USA?

Thank you,
Katriz

questionDear Katriz,

I always recommend a comprehensive plan over a fixed one (so the first, more expensive one). This is because the coverage is more complete. Here's how it works: You pay your deductible (whatever you choose at the time of purchase), then you pay 20% of the next $5000 in expenses (so up to an additional $1,000) and then the plan pays up to the maximum of the plan. In the case of a pre-existing condition, the maximum limit is reduced, usually to $25,000.

In a fixed plan, the company pays a set amount for each medical expense (after you pay the deductible). If you are charged more than they pay, then you pay the difference for each expense. So, the fixed plan will pay something for everything, but it may not pay 100% of anything. You cannot calcite an "out-of-pocket" expense with that plan like you can with a comprehensive plan because you will need an itemized bill from the provider and they will only pay a certain amount for each item.
I hope that clears it up. There is an example and comparison on our website here: Fixed and Comprensive insurance plan benefits

questionHello,

I have a son aged 20 who is looking to study in US He is an Australian Citizen. Travelling to USA college in July 2018. He is a type 1 diabetic and needs cover for that pre-existing condition. What companies offer the best coverage. He will hope to be in USA college for two to four years. I am still a little confused in regards to Pre-existing conditions and acute onset.

What would this actually mean for a type one diabetic with really good control?
We are not looking for coverage for his ongoing management drugs, etc that can easily be managed from Australia. What are examples of acute onset with Diabetes?
As a couple of scenarios what if:
He was discovered in a distressed state that he could not help himself due to low glucose levels and was sent to hospital for treatment.
He was sent to hospital with vomiting and diarrhoea and then as part of their management plan the hospital treated him differently because he was a diabetic? This initial enquiry is about a 20 year old healthy type 1 diabetic male, from Australia, who has been offered a college place in the USA for 1- 2 years commencing July this year.

questionDear Sam Camp,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your travel health insurance needs!
Here are the plans from the company INF that cover pre existing conditions. This link below will provide the comparison of 3 plans that cover pre existing condition. 2 of the plans are fixed and one of them is comprehensive. One of the fixed plans cover only acute onset of the pre existing condition and the other 2 cover full pre existing condition. Please look here for more details: Compare INF Pre-existing Condition Travel Plans.
Acute onset as I understand is a sudden recurrence of the condition that is unexpected and needs urgent care treatment. I might not be able to give specific examples. Maybe something like a heart attack or a stroke that is unexpected and has occurred due to the condition that is existing.

For a healthy person who is not having any issues and the condition is in total control, they don't have to worry.

We mention the details to make sure that we are giving the right information and therefore I wanted to tell you that only acute onset is covered.

The incident that you have mentioned here about the low glucose level might be an acute onset but I cannot confirm that. This is something that a doctor would do and the doctor's report would say if it is acute onset or not.

If your son has any specific requirements for the health insurance from the college, you can take a look at our student plans by getting quote here: student insurance plans
These plans have a waiting period of either 6 months or 12 months for pre-existing condition coverage.

questionDear customer support,

Is osteoporosis a "pre-existing condition" ?
Thank you,
Darlene

questionDear Darlene,

Yes. Anything you have been diagnosed with, are being treated for or have with reasonable medical certainty before the policy begins is considered pre-existing. However, if you break a bone, I don't think (even if you were at higher risk) that would be excluded from coverage since the break was ultimately caused by a fall or accident. The only time pre-existing conditions are a main concern is when they can cause an emergency by themselves, like a heart condition leading to a heart attack or a diabetic having some emergency due to their diabetes.

Please let us know if we can help you in any further.

questionDear customer support,

Does any of your policies cover pre-existing conditions ?
Thank you,
Barkh

questionDear Barkh,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your travel health insurance needs! Some policies that we offer cover "acute onset" of a pre-existing condition. So, first of all, the condition should be stable and not worsening. Further, regular medication or treatment that is required for the conditions is not covered. However, some policies will cover a sudden and unexpected emergency due to that medical condition.

Another important factor in this coverage is the age of the insured. There is pretty good coverage for acute onset of pre-existing conditions for persons under 70 years of age. If you are over 70, here are the plans from the INF that cover full pre existing conditions.

INF Elite network short term:
This is a comprehensive plan and covers up to age 99. Please see the below links for more details on this plan. The Elite plan has a fixed pre-existing condition maximum limit up to which the pre-existing condition would be covered.

INF Premier short term:
This is a fixed plan from INF that provides full pre existing condition coverage. The Premier plan has a fixed pre-existing condition maximum limit up to which the pre-existing condition would be covered.

There is one fixed and one comprehensive option from Trawick International called Safe Travels USA Diamond (fixed) or Safe Travels USA Comprehensive (comprehensive).

Safe Travels USA Comprehensive:-
You can review all these plans (fixed and comprehensive) using this page on our website: Pre-existing plans. If we can help you with your specific case, please tell us your visitor's age and how long you need the insurance.

Travel health insurance plans are for sudden and unexpected situations. Any preventive care work is not covered by the short term travel health insurance plans. The Elite plan has a fixed pre-existing condition maximum limit up to which the pre-existing condition would be covered.

Plans from INF provide full pre existing condition coverage.

  • It will cover all the pre-existing condition like Heart Issues ?

  • Does it need any pre-approvals ?
Thank you,
Manu

questionDear Manu,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance! We are always striving to provide the best and most options for international travelers.
Plans from INF have been introduced that provide full pre existing condition coverage:

INF Elite Network: This is a comprehensive plan and provides a policy maximum option of $75,000 for the age range of 70 to 99.Depending on the deductible selected and the age the coverage varies from 20,000 to 25,000.The Elite plan has a fixed pre-existing condition maximum limit up to which the pre-existing condition would be covered. Please see here for more details:

INF Premier plan: This is a fixed benefits plan and this plan provides a policy maximum of $100,000 for age range of 70 to 99. Depending on deductible selected and the age, coverage varies form 15,000 to 60,000. Please see here for more details:

Trawick International have plans that are unique in offering coverage for "acute onset" of pre-existing conditions for up to $25,000 for persons over 70 and under 90 years of age. The price of the policy for younger travelers makes it an economical option for coverage of acute onset of pre-existing conditions up to the medical maximum for those under 70 years. This plan will cost about $1,499 for the dates you gave me with a $50,000 maximum and a $250 deductible. Please find the answers to your questions below:

  • It will cover all the pre-existing condition like Heart Issues ?
Answer: The plan covers acute onset of pre-existing conditions up to a maximum of $25,000.
  • Also, what will be the coverage If I increase my deductible to the highest level 5000?
Answer: The coverage level is not affected by deductible. The deductible is what your visitor will have to pay (for any medical expenses) before the insurance begins to pay on their behalf.
  • Does it need any pre-approvals ?
Answer:In general, no. There are no pre-approvals necessary. For somethings, like hospital stay, you must tell them as soon as possible. Also, if a doctor orders a particularly expensive test (MRI), you should call for pre-certification, just in case. But you can go to any doctor, including specialist without a referral.

We offer several visitors insurance options for acute onset of pre-existing conditions to individuals that are specifically worried about coverage of pre-existing conditions. Also, policies will not cover traveling to a country IN ORDER to receive treatment. The situation must be unexpected.
You can compare quotes offered by the different pre-existing coverage plans at - Visitor Medical Compare
The best coverage for acute onset of pre-existing conditions is now found in the Travel Medical plan. If you purchase a $1 million maximum policy, you can get coverage for pre-existing for up to $150,000 which is the most you can get for pre-existing conditions. The benefit is graded to the maximum with a $500k max having a $125,000 benefit, the other plans offer coverage to their maximums for a pre-existing condition. This benefit is for persons under 70 only and the policy can be purchased for up to 6 months.

Safe Travels USA Comprehensive plans includes coverage for acute onset of pre-existing conditions, emergency medical evacuation, repatriation and security evacuation benefits.

Another excellent option is the Patriot Platinum plan which can be purchased at high maximums ($500k, $1 million and $100k for persons over 70). questionHi,

I am 26 year old visitor visiting US on visitor visa. Are there any good comprehensive What is acute onset of pre existing condition?
Thank you,
Neehaa

questionDear Neehaa,

Thank you for your email. Acute Onset of Pre-existing Condition means a sudden and unexpected outbreak or recurrence of a pre-existing condition(s) which occurs spontaneously and without advance warning either in the form of physician recommendations or symptoms, is of short duration, is rapidly progressive, and requires urgent care. The Acute Onset of a Pre-existing Condition(s) must occur after the certificate effective date. Treatment must be obtained within 24 hours of the sudden and unexpected outbreak or recurrence. A pre-existing condition that is a chronic or congenital condition or that gradually becomes worse over time will not be considered Acute Onset. This benefit does not include coverage for known, scheduled, required, or expected medical care, drugs or treatments existent or necessary prior to the certificate effective date.
Claims for acute onset or recurrence of pre-exiting condition will be determined by the provider and the claims department of the insurance company.

Are Chronic health conditions covered, ie Atrial Fibrilation or Ulcerated colitis
Thank you,

questionDear Sonia,

No. They are not. You can get some conditions covered for "acute onset" of a preexisting condition, but a condition must be stable and fully controlled. Also, the "new" situation must be "unexpected" not a worsening of a chronic condition. Note that some conditions are specifically excluded in policies (not those you mention, however, but HIV infection, cancer, to name a few.

questionDear Geetha,

Thank you for contacting us for your insurance needs.
I know that the insurance company will not cover for any treatment taken that occurred before the policy became effective. However if you need a plan for your father for future needs, this plan is a good comprehensive plan that covers pre existing condition up to the age of 70 for Non US citizens traveling outside their home country. This is the plan that we recommend for your father.

The Patriot insurance plan offered by IMG is specifically designed for short term visitors to USA and is a hugely popular choice among tourists to America.
This company has recently made a new policy which covers "acute onset of pre-existing conditions" for persons under 70 years of age. That policy is called Patriot America Plus and is in all other ways the same as the Patriot America policy.

Atlas America is a great choice particularly if you are interested in $100,000 maximum and your visitor is under 80 years of age since they offer a matching $100,000 for coverage of "acute onset" of pre-existing conditions. This is also a great option because if you use in-network providers, you only pay deductible and no coinsurance (you pay 20% out of network of the first $5,000 in medical bills).

The other excellent option is Patriot America Plus by IMG:

That's a great question and it does depend on the company and their definitions and limitations. I have put their verbiage below:
Pre-existing Condition Limitation:
Benefits are not available for any services received on or within 180 days after the Eligibility Date of an Insured Person, if those services are related to a Pre-existing Condition as defined in the Definitions section.
This limitation does not apply to the Medical Evacuation Benefit, the Repatriation of Remains Benefit and to the Bedside Visit Benefit.

Here's how they define a pre-existing condition:
Preexisting Condition means any disease, illness, sickness, malady or condition which was diagnosed or treated by a legally qualified physician prior to the effective date of coverage with consultation, advice or treatment by a legally qualified physician occurring within 180 days prior to the Coverage Date for the insured.

So, something pre-existing but more than 6 months before the start date of the policy (unless requiring on going treatment) will NOT be considered a pre-existing condition. AND treatment on pre-existing conditions will not be covered for the first 6 months of the policy. That would apply to ALL medical costs (medicines, dr visit, blood test, etc) EXCEPT emergency medical evacuation, repatriation, and bedside visit benefits (as stated in their policy).

Let us know if you have any further questions.

questionHello Again,

1. What is meant by remark ? : With purchase of "Heart Care Plus" rider provides $2,500 in event of heart attack or stroke even if due to a pre-existing condition.
2. I, an Indian Citizen, am diabetic and hyper Tension. I take medicines for both, and both are under good control. I have also Permanent Implanted Pace make (Medtronic, US make) since last 5 years.
Please inform me what exact illness and circumstances are not covered / fully covered in both Insurance policies offered (a) Visitors care - Heart care Plus and (b) Patriot Platinum Comprehensive
3. What is the exact difference between the two policies ?
4. Is a visit to medical doctor in US covered under Heart Care Plus policy?
5. If any blood tests are carried out in US, will they be covered under Policy?

Thanks,
Hi! I chatted with Amit earlier today and am sending this to both of you in response. It looks like a colleague did respond to Nalin, but on a different email address, so I will try this one. Please see answers beneath your questions:

1. What is meant by remark ? : With purchase of "Heart Care Plus" rider provides $2,500 in event of heart attack or stroke even if due to a pre-existing condition.
The "Heart Care Plus" is a rider for which you pay extra on the policy.
It covers only $2,500 in the event of a heart attack or stroke. As I explained to Amit, this would NOT cover any emergency needs arising from diabetes or other pre-existing condition.

As mentioned above, the Visitor's Care plan WITH the Heart Care plus only covers $2,500 in the event of heart attack or stroke. The Patriot Platinum plan also covers only $2,500 for any pre-existing condition. So this amount would be available for any emergency due to any pre-existing condition.

3. What is the exact difference between the two policies ?
The Visitor's care is a fixed plan and the Patriot Platinum is comprehensive. Please see the links to the brochures (below) for details.

4. Is a visit to medical doctor in US covered under Heart Care Plus policy?
Doctor visits if you are sick are covered by either plan. The Visitor's Care policy only pays $85 for doctor visit (subject to deductible). The Patriot plan would cover it subject to deductible and coinsurance (10 or 20% of the first $5,000 in expenses).

5. If any blood tests are carried out in US, will they be covered under Policy?
Any blood tests, X-rays, procedures would be covered for any covered illness as prescribed by a doctor. The Visitor's Care plan is subject to individual medical expense limits (see brochure for details), where the Patriot plan is always only subject to one time deductible and one time coinsurance.

Here are links for the brochures and links to purchase and/or get a free quote on the policies:

You can get all information about Patriot Platinum plan by reading the plan brochure and Patriot Platinum insurance policy online..

Since both plans are offered by the same insurance company, they use the same PPO. Note that you are not required to use the PPO, but get some direct and indirect benefits from using it (the coinsurance is only 10% if the PPO is used, but 20% outside it; indirectly get benefit of negotiated pricing).

I hope I have been able to answer your questions and provide you with enough information to make your decision. Do let us know if you have further questions or concerns. It will be our pleasure to assist you.

Feel free to contact us in case of any questions or concerns.

questionHello,

Please can you suggest insurance plans for my parents visiting me in the US that offers coverage for pre-existing conditions?
Also for how long can I buy the policy and how isthe premium paid (monthly)?
Thanks,
Scott Mead

questonDear Scott,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your travel health insurance needs! Here are the links for the policies that satisfy your needs:
Here are some plans that cover people up to the age of 99.
INF Elite Network: This is a comprehensive plan from INF and offers a maximum of $75,000 for people in the age range of 70 to 99. This plan provides full pre existing coverage. The Elite plan has a fixed pre-existing condition maximum limit up to which the pre-existing condition would be covered. Here are the details:

INF Premier plan: This is a fixed plan and offers full pre existing condition coverage up to the age of 99.The Premier plan has a fixed pre-existing condition maximum limit up to which the pre-existing condition would be covered. The coverage is specific to the deductible chosen and the age of the individual. Here are the details:

Inbound USA Basic: This is a fixed plan from Seven Corners and provides a policy maximum of $100,000 for people above 70 up to 99. It offers acute onset of pre existing condition coverage for people up to age 79.

Inbound USA Choice plan: This is a fixed plan and is similar to the Basic plan but the specific benefit coverage varies. Here are the details:

Below are a few more comprehensive plans if interested:
1. Atlas America from WorldTrips:Atlas America is a great choice particularly if you are interested in $100,000 maximum and your visitor is under 80 years of age since they offer a matching $100,000 for coverage of "acute onset" of pre-existing conditions. This is also a great option because if you use in-network providers, you only pay deductible and no coinsurance (you pay 20% out of network of the first $5,000 in medical bills). These features make it a really good option for visitors to the US.
Policy Period: This plan has a policy period of 364 days.
To get a quote and purchase the plan, use the links below:

2.Patriot America Plus from IMG: The other excellent option is Patriot America Plus. They are very economically priced. They offer coverage for "sudden and unexpected recurrence" of a pre-existing condition up to choosen plan maximum for customers up to 70 years. The coinsurance is only 10% of the first $5,000 after the deductible. These benefits make this plan another excellent choice.
Policy Period: This plan can be bought for up to 2 years.
To research your options, check prices, brochure or PPO network, you can go to this page on our website:

Payment of premium: The money you pay is for the entire duration that you specify while purchasing with the start and the end date.

questionHello,

Can you tell me which kind of disease you will cover if I buy a fixed insurance for my mom? And what's the difference between fixed and comprehensive insurance? It covers different diseases or similar?
Thanks,
Narendra

questionDear Narendra,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your travel health insurance needs! We do not have a list of diseases that we cover. Our traveler's health insurance primarily covers any new illnesses and emergency. If your concern is for pre-existing condition, we have plans that cover "acute onset" of pre existing condition.

You can compare quotes offered by the different pre-existing coverage plans at - visitors medical compare pre-existing
You can also view the brochure for each of the plans from the above link.
To understand the difference between the fixed and comprehensive plans, please refer to - Fixed comprehensive coverage

questionHi,

Does all the suggested policies for providing coverage for pre existing conditions cover high blood pressure as a pre existing condition without limit of look back period? And if they have a look back period, does it mean that it will only cover high blood pressure that within this period? My mom has high blood pressure for 10 years.
Thanks,
Sarah

question Dear Sarah,

hank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your needs!
Pre-existing conditions are medical ailments for which a person has been diagnosed, is being treated for or has before the start of the insurance policy.
Since these policies provide coverage for pre-existing conditions, High blood pressure coverage will be available as a pre-existing condition.
All of these policies are Comprehensive insurance for visitors and they have a look back period of 3 years or 36 months for the pre existing condition coverage.
When the look back period for the plan is 3 years, the conditions for which the treatment has been received in the time period of 3 years prior to the insurance coverage effective date will not be covered.

questionHello!

I am a little bit confused about the 'look back period' you mentioned. Does this mean the plan will only cover the high blood pressure that appeared within last 3 years? My mom's has been in high blood pressure for over 10 years (more than 3-year limit). So the plan will not cover it, right? Maybe my understanding about the 'look back period' is wrong.:)
Albert

questionDear Albert,

A "look back" period is used to define what is considered a pre-existing condition. If you had some medical issue longer ago than the look back period (and you don't have it anymore), then it would NOT be considered pre-existing any longer and would be covered by the plan as any other illness. The problem with chronic illness, of course, is that you have it your whole life. In that case, you have to get a policy that WILL specifically cover "acute" or sudden onset of the pre-existing condition (it will not cover regular medication or regularly needed treatment).
That is why the policies I mention will work in case your mother would have some emergency due to her pre-existing condition. The look back period is not relevant to the coverage of "acute" or "sudden" onset of the pre-existing condition.
I hope that clears it up for you.

questionDear customer support,

Me (63 Years), and My wife (69 years), intend to visit USA from 5th July to 17 th Oct 2013, from My wife is 57 yrs old and she is travelling between USA and Europe for 6 months. She needs coverage for acute onset of pre existing conditions. Can you suggest a plan that can cover her in both locations and provide coverage for pre existing conditions?
Thanks,
Singhal

questionDear Mr Rajendra,

Your wife can purchase the Atlas America plan from WorldTrips.. She can enter US as the destination country. This will cover her both inside and outside of US as long as she is travelling outside of her home country.
Alternatively, she can purchase two separate policies one for her stay in the USA and another for her trip outside US. This will work out cheaper as the coverage rates in the USA are higher than the outbound travel rates.

Please let us know if we can help you in any further.

questionDear Sir/Madam

I am looking for travel insurance options for my parents who are 72 and 67 year-old and have pre-existing conditions as blood pressure for my dad and kidney stone for my mom. Are kidney stones considered a pre existing condition. They will be visiting USA from Oct 29 to Jan 15. Please let me know if the insurance quote I got from here covers the pre-existing conditions as described above

Thanks,

questionDear James,

Thank you for your inquiry and allowing us to help you with your insurance needs. We offer several visitors insurance options for acute onset of pre-existing conditions to individuals that are specifically worried about coverage of pre-existing conditions. Most of the plans provide coverage for pre-existing conditions for "acute onset" of a pre-existing condition, however we have identified the plans that have some coverage for preexisting conditions for individuals traveling out of their home country. Please note that some diseases are excluded from coverage like HIV and cancer, so consult the list of exclusions of the plans to be sure your condition is not excluded.

INF Elite Network plan: This is a comprehensive plan from INF. This plan provide full pre existing condition coverage unlike most of the other plans. This plan covers people up to the age 99 .The Elite plan has a fixed pre-existing condition maximum limit up to which the pre-existing condition would be covered. Here are the plan and coverage details of this plan.

Inbound USA plan from Seven Corners has been updated where it comes in two versions as Inbound USA Basic and Inbound USA Choice. Inbound USA Basic and Inbound USA Choice plans provide coverage for acute onset of pre existing conditions up to the age of 99. The coverage reduces for the ones in the age range of 70 to 99. Please see here for plan and coverage details:

The most limited plan is the very popular and economic Visitor's Care plan. They offer a "Heart Care Plus" rider which can be purchased which covers of $5,000 (for persons under 70) or $2,500 (for persons 70 and up) in the event of a heart attack or stroke even if due to a pre-existing condition.

The Atlas America policy covers complications of pregnancy in the first 26 weeks of gestation. So, the only thing it would NOT cover are regular OB visits, ultrasound, etc. This is the best option for your wife's situation.

Cost of best US travel insurance for pre-existing conditions

There is no single cost for all visitors insurance as the cost of US visitors insurance varies based on several such as the age of the visitor, medical maximum coverage, deductible for the plan, type of visitors insurance (Fixed vs comprehensive travel insurance), and the coverage if any for pre-existing conditions. For an average traveler, there are cheap travel insurance plans at less than a dollar a day. In general the cost of US travel insurance starts from as low as $15 per month and can go up to $200 per month. Understandably, the more expensive the travel insurance, the better and more comprehensive will be the travel insurance coverage.

What is visitors insurance for pre-existing conditions?

There are several visitors insurance plans available for international travel. However, many travel insurance and visitors insurance plans exclude pre-existing conditions. This means that a travel insurance plan will not cover the costs of treating a pre-existing medical condition. Therefore, the insurance company may deny a claim if the ailment already existed when the travel insurance was purchased. However, there are some travel medical insurance plans that offer coverage for pre-existing conditions and the policy clearly defines a look-back period and what is covered for pre-existing conditions, as well as specifying a limit to this coverage.

Some travel health insurance plans like Atlas America, Patriot America Plus offer coverage for the acute onset of a pre-existing conditions, ie, when there is a sudden medical emergency without any prior symptom that needs to be treated immediately. The coverage typically includes emergency medical treatment, hospitalization, and evacuation expenses related to the acute onset of the pre-existing condition. INF insurance however has the INF Elite insurance plans which cover pre-existing conditions going beyond the acute onset coverage. It is important to compare visitors insurance for pre-existing conditions both for the price as well as the specific details for pre-existing conditions coverage as well as review the policy brochures for exclusions and coverage limits before making a decision.

How does travel insurance for pre-existing conditions work?

The travel health insurance plans which cover pre-existing conditions have clear definitions of what is a pre-existing condition, the look back period for pre-existing condition, whether the travel insurance coverage is limited to acute onset of pre-existing conditions, and if it provides full coverage for pre-existing conditions the coverage limit within the policy for pre-existing conditons. Any travel health insurance coverage for pre-existing conditions will depend on all these.

Factors to consider while purchasing visitors health insurance for pre existing conditions?

The following are important factors for buying travel insurance for pre-existing conditions

  1. The definition of pre-existing conditions and the look back period under the policy.
  2. The eligibility age limit for pre-existing conditions coverage.
  3. Whether pre-existing condition coverage is limited to acute onset of pre-existing conditions.
  4. The coverage limit for pre-existing conditions which is different from the policy medical maximum.
  5. The deductible and out of pocket expenses for pre-existing conditions coverage.

Why is travel health insurance for pre-existing conditions coverage important?

There are many international travelers who have medical ailments and it is important for them to be well informed about visitors insurance for pre-existing conditions. Many of the regular travel insurance plans exclude any coverage for pre-existing conditions. The definition of pre-existing conditions varies for different insurance providers as they have a ‘look back’ period and any medical ailments during this look back period would be considered pre-existing. At American Visitor Insurance, we offer plans which do offer coverage for acute onset of a pre-existing condition, as well as full coverage for pre-existing conditions up to a clearly defined limit in the policy document. All of these details can be better understood by using our facility for comparing visitors insurance for pre-existing conditions.

Pre-existing conditions coverage - FAQ's

01. How do I know if my pre-existing condition is covered by travel insurance?

Unfortunately, this simple question has a fairly complicated answer. The answer is: it depends. Firstly, it depends on whether you are a US resident traveling outside the US or a visitor to the US. US residents can purchase trip cancellation insurance that can cover pre-existing conditions and even plans that are travel medical only without cancellation often are more generous in their coverage of pre-existing conditions. These plans may have specific requirements in order to waive the usual exclusion of coverage for pre-existing conditions (like purchase them within a certain number of days of your initial trip deposit or that you have a primary domestic insurance plan in the US), so you should check these details carefully if this is important to you.

Non-US residents or US residents traveling into the US have much more limited options to insure their pre-existing conditions are covered. Some plans offer coverage for "acute onset" of pre-existing conditions. However, this is misleading, since a careful look at their definition excludes chronic or congenital disorders from such coverage. Chronic illnesses are those that worsen over time and congenital disorders are issues one is born with. They exclude emergencies due to chronic illness because they will say that is not "acute" it is simply a worsening of your condition. There are only two policies we know of that offer coverage for pre-existing medical conditions. They are INF Premier and INF Elite plans.

Firstly, they define pre-existing conditions in the following way: A pre-existing condition is a condition for which the insured received treatment or took medication for in the previous 12 months before the start of the policy. If the medication dosage has not changed and is taken as a maintenance medication, this would NOT count as a flare up or treatment of the condition. In that case, very stable conditions that have no flare ups in the past 12 months are not even excluded as pre-existing conditions. Conditions that have had flare ups or doctor recommended treatment or change in medication, are still covered by the plans but with a higher deductible and a lower maximum.

INF Elite (also INF Elite 90) are comprehensive plans offering fairly complete coverage. INF Premier is a fixed plan. Find details on these plans here.

The above plans must be purchased for at least 90 days and can be quite pricey for seniors, but they offer the only real coverage for chronic conditions.

The other option, of course, is to take a plans with little ($1K) or no coverage for pre-existing conditions and take a risk that that condition will not flare up during the trip.

02. What does full coverage for Pre-Existing Conditions mean?

INF plans boast they offer "full" coverage for pre-existing conditions. This can be a little misleading. Firstly, any regular treatment or medication that is required by the condition is never covered. The main advantage to the INF Elite and INF Premier is that they cover sudden illness/injury regardless of whether it is pre-existing or not. The only difference is that a pre-existing condition will be covered with a higher deductible at at a lower maximum than any other "new" illness or injury. However, coverage is not limited to an emergency or life-threatening situation.

03. What does "acute onset of pre-existing conditions" mean?

The "Acute Onset of a Pre-Existing Condition" is a sudden and unexpected outbreak or recurrence of a pre-existing medical condition which occurs without any advance warning either in the form of physician recommendations or symptoms and requires immediate care (within 24 hours of first symptoms). A Pre-Existing Condition that is a chronic or congenital condition or that gradually becomes worse over time will not be considered acute onset.

The acute onset coverage benefit does not include coverage for known, scheduled, required, or expected medical care, drugs or treatment existent or necessary prior to the effective date of coverage. An example of this might be someone who has a food allergy or bee allergy and is unknowingly exposed to their allergen and requires immediate medical attention.

04. What is the difference between Full Pre-Existing & Acute Onset Insurance?

Acute onset of a pre-existing condition can be defined as the sudden & unexpected occurrence of a pre-existing condition which requires in-patient, emergency hospitalization within 24 hours of exhibiting first symptoms. The main difference between acute onset & full pre-existing is that with Full Pre-Existing coverage, is that one is covered for all pre-existing conditions and associated medical costs and this includes follow up visits, hospitalizations and doctor’s visits, etc. The acute onset coverage will only cover the in-patient hospitalization expense.

05. What are the limits of Full Pre-Existing plans under INF travel insurance?

Full Pre-existing means we will cover any issue regarding a pre-existing condition, however, if one is traveling to the United States solely for medical treatment, that will not be covered. INF plans do not cover any medical tourism related claims. Pre-existing conditions under the INF plans are covered with a higher deductible and a lower maximum than other illnesses or injuries. These are chosen or specified when you purchase you plan.

06. Do INF travel insurance plans really cover all pre-existing conditions?

Yes, the INF policies will cover any pre-existing issue that the traveler may have during their stay in the United States. This includes blood pressure, diabetes, kidney related issues and arthritis, all of which are covered by the INF Premier, INF Premier Plus, INF Elite, INF Elite Plus and INF Elite 90, Hop Travel Assist, Hop Mindoro Assist, Hop WorldHopper, Hop Trip Assist Plus Plans.

07. Why are Full Pre-Existing plans more expensive than other visitors insurance plans?

The insurance company takes on an enormous risk by insuring individuals and including coverage for pre-existing conditions without any prior medical examination. Under the INF plans, you are paying more, but you are getting the full value for the money you pay given the very high cost of US healthcare. With the INF Premier, INF Premier Plus, INF Elite, INF Elite Plus and INF Elite 90, Hop Travel Assist, Hop Mindoro Assist, Hop WorldHopper, Hop Trip Assist Plus Plans, even though it is expensive, you can have the comfort of knowing that you are covered for any emergency or contingency. This peace of mind given the expensive US healthcare expense is what makes INF plans worth it despite being expensive.

08. What services are covered under visitors insurance full pre-existing coverage?

The list of covered services under Visitors insurance full pre-existing conditions coverage can be found on the American Visitor Insurance website of the INF Premier, INF Premier Plus, INF Elite, INF Elite Plus and INF Elite 90, Hop Travel Assist, Hop Mindoro Assist, Hop WorldHopper, Hop Trip Assist Plus Plan pages. INF plans are open to green card holders
