Rollout of vaccinations for Covid virus across the globe

Covid 19 pandemic which started in late 2019 has destroyed the health and safety of humanity across the globe. Governments, the vaccine industry and researchers are committed towards the global efforts to care for the people affected by the virus, develop means to stop future outbreaks and contain the existing outbreak. The world’s biggest vaccination campaign has begun worldwide; about 104 million doses have been administered across 66 countries.

The vaccination will be carried on with phases where Phase 1b-frontline workers and citizens aged 75 years and older will be vaccinated and Phase 1c-People who are aged about 65-74 years and about 16 -64 years will be vaccinated. A US manufacturer Pfizer and BioNTech a German biotechnology company was the first to release late-stage trial data on 18th November 2020.The United Kingdom chose to be the first country to take the shot for emergency use of the vaccine from BioNTech-Pfizer and began to administer the dose on December 8, 2020.Canada on December 9th 2020 approved of vaccinations and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on December 11th 2020.

About 22.4 million shots have been administered among the healthcare workers in the US by 14thDecember 2020. Ever since the vaccines have been approved about 32.9 million people in the US have received at one dose each and 9.8 million people have been fully vaccinated with two shots. The new President Joe Biden has announced a goal of administering 1.5 million doses of coronavirus vaccine each day.

In the first week of February the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that about 1.49 million shots have been administered each day. The Biden administration also announced that as a part of bringing equity they will begin the distribution of vaccines to clinics in underserved areas.

European Union started its vaccine campaign on December 27th 2020 and it’s due to receive 12.5 million doses to cover 450 million people across 27 of its member states over the year 2021. The administration of the vaccine varies from country to country and state to state. Each of them with their own strategy targeting the healthcare workers and citizens aged above 65 years get vaccinated first.

In continuation to the global effort to curb Covid 19 pandemic on 3rd February 2021 the WHO Global Ambassador said that an immediate action needs to be taken to tackle noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and an urgent need for stronger public health policies. The NCDs have accounted for over 74% of deaths globally and worsened the situation of the covid 19 patients. The pandemic has emphasized the danger of NCDs such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, cancer and respiratory diseases.

Researchers and scientists are still working to ensure that the best vaccine has been administered to humankind however vaccines alone will not completely stop the spread of the virus.

New Delta and Omicron mutations of Covid19

In 2022, much of the world believed that the covid19 pandemic was behind us as different countries started reopening their borders to normal activity. Unfortunately the Delta and Omicron variant have become the dominant variant across several countries despite vaccinations.

The CDC in fact believe the Delta and Omicron variants to be the most contagious variant and may even partially evade the antibodies made by the immune system after a Covid19 infection or vaccination. Early study specifies that the Delta and Omicron variants mainly targets the younger people and even vaccinated people in large numbers.

After a steady decline in the number of cases, the Delta and Omicron variants has resulted in an increase in cases in the US especially in areas where the vaccination rates are low. The Delta and Omicron variants has swept across the globe impacting several countries including the US, the UK, France, Russia, Israel, Germany, Portugal, Italy, India, Indonesia, Ireland and Denmark.

The travel situation worldwide has been changing frequently as we all deal with the on-going (seemingly endless) pandemic. Thanks to vaccinations, some travel is opening up and people are feeling a little more confident to take to the skies to visit distant lands. Heaven knows we can all use a break from our daily grind! Some countries are now requiring specific COVID coverage for visitors to their countries regardless of vaccination status. Some countries waive insurance requirements for those who are fully vaccinated (note that the definition of "fully" vaccinated changes over time).

Some countries have threatened to close their doors to unvaccinated travelers. So, travel during COVID is a bit more challenging than before, but not impossible. Luckily, here at American Visitor Insurance we have a range of products to fit most needs, particularly to meet country requirements for travel at very economical prices.

Furthermore, a growing number of travelers from the US are wanting to be sure that some sort of "quarantine" coverage is on their policies. At the current time, the US requires a negative COVID test to return to the US (that is, to get on the plane to return home). So, if you test positive, you will then be forced into quarantine or isolation for some days until you can test negative (hopefully, 5 days, but can be longer and may depend on your host country). Luckily, we have a plan now for US residents that includes this Covid Quarantine expenses coverage.

How will the insurance company know you have Covid19 as a new illness or already had it?

Generally, the accepted incubation period for the virus has been established at 14 days. This is not always the case, but many countries have adopted a standard two week quarantine period for their visitors and it seems likely you will show symptoms within this time frame should you have it. Further evidence shows that you are most contagious during the early part of your infection, so this period would allow that most contagious time to be over.

So, what we are really concerned about is: What if I get sick with COVID-19 during the first 14 days of my trip? What will the insurance company do? This is a valid question for both parties concerned. The answer is: we don’t know. It will depend on many factors. If the place you are going does good contact tracing, perhaps you will be notified that some place where you were, there was a confirmed case and you should quarantine for that reason. If you get sick after that, you will have some evidence of where you picked up the infection.

Covid19 travel insurance FAQ's

What is the average cost of COVID-19 tests for insured people?

The US has been increasing its COVID testing and is even providing free testing in many locations, however the cost of a coronavirus test varies among the providers, labs and states. The typical charges for paid testing varies from $20 up to $200. The federal law requires all regular domestic health insurers to cover the costs of the insured for Covid19 test, however this has to be prescribed by a medical practitioner.

Why does traveling increase the spread of COVID-19?

SARs CoV2-Covid19 is a respiratory infectious disease which spreads through a person’s cough, sneezes or breathes and enters the other person through mouth, nose and eyes. It also spreads via surfaces which are contaminated by an infected person. Hence it is difficult to stay safer and maintain social distancing in crowded places which makes travelling a higher risk in contacting Covid19. To avoid infection, one must be extra careful and wear a mask at all times along with washing ones hands frequently and maintaining social distancing as best as possible.

Do face masks provide protection from COVID-19?

Wearing masks is one of the measures to overpower the transmission of the virus . Wearing of the mask alone is not sufficient for protection against Covid 19, however it is an important factor to prevent infection .One must follow all the public health recommendations provided by CDC to be safe.

Can antibiotics treat coronavirus disease?

Covid 19 is caused by a virus and not bacteria hence antibiotics should not be used as a treatment against coronavirus.

Can the coronavirus disease spread through food?

So far there has been no proof that Covid 19 can be spread via food and food containers. However it's good and safer to practice hygiene to prevent any infection arising from food.

Do you have travel insurance that covers COVID quarantine costs?

Yes, we do offer COVID quarantine insurance coverage . Since all travelers coming to the US need to test for Covid before they are allowed to fly to the US, there is always a risk of testing Covid positive and being forced to Quarantine while outside the United States. US travelers can buy trip cancellation insurance with Quarantine coverage (covers both the health of the traveler and the trip cancellation expenses) or Travel insurance that covers Covid quarantine costs (cheaper but covers only the health of the traveler, not the trip cancellation expenses). International travelers who are Non US citizens can also buy travel insurance with Covid quarantine expenses covered
