01.  J2 Insurance for visitor to the US

questionHi,
Please will you be able to assist in sending me a quotation for my husband on a J2 visa, aged 35, as well as my daughter aged 5 years. We want to please pay monthly.
I have to take out health insurance with Cultural Vistas, for a trainee J1 visa. I have looked at the prices on your website, however, the quote states $0 when emailed to me.

Warm regards,
Natalie

questionDear Natalie,

Here is a plan that is suitable for J1 and J2 Visa holders:

02. Student health insurance with Maternity Coverage for Dependents

questionHi,
I’m looking for maternity for my wife.

Thank you,
Madhur

questionDear Madhur,

Students and scholars on F or J visas have the best coverage for maternity coverage. However, the benefits have been reduced a few years ago such that the best coverage is 80% coverage of costs, so please be aware that you will be responsible for a portion of all costs. Also note that unless your wife is the J1 visa holder YOU will have to be the primary on the policy and she (with J2) will be secondary. Also note that prices are DIFFERENT for the primary and the spouse, so when you quote the prices, quote them for two people at the same time since the cost will be MUCH HIGHER for your wife's coverage.

There are five policies that cover maternity at an 80% coverage without a set limit on benefits. I will list them in order of their approximate cost. Note that conception has to occur after the start of the plan and most plans ask that you let them know at least three months before your delivery date.

Study USA Pref 300 and Pref 500 both cover maternity at a 80/70% (in network/out of network). Conception has to occur after the start of this plan. This plan will be about $133 for the Elite plan.To get details for Study USA, , please visit the below links

Liaison Student plans Choice and Plus have a $10k limit on maternity benefits at 80/60 coverage respectively. The Choice plan will cost about $151 per month. To view all information on the insurance, please visit the below links:
Student Secure Elite, Seletc and Budget plans also cover at 80/70% to the maximum of the plan. The Select plan can be purchased with a $300k maximum, Budget plan can be purchased with a $250k maximum and the Elite can be purchased with $500k.The Elite plan will cost $375 per month, Select about $220 and Budget about $95. To view all information on the insurance, use below links:
Student Health Advantage Platinum has a $5000 maximum limit to maternity and newborn care coverage. It has a $1 million maximum and a $35 deductible and covers at 80/60%. The plan also covers pre-existing conditions with a 6 month waiting period. This plan will cost about $314 per month.
We are an agency and we work with 8 different insurance companies to give our clients as great a variety of plans as we can to get the coverage they need. Do let us know if we can assist you any further.

03. J2 Visa holder needing health insurance that covers Covid-19

questionHi,
I am looking for medical insurance coverage as a J-2 Visa that should start on August 1st and that can be cancellable with no fees before the starting date (since I am living abroad and do not know yet if borders will open by that date).
The insurance policy should include:

  • maternity coverage
  • repatriation
  • medical evacuation
  • must pay up to $10,000 for the expenses of travel if, because of a serious illness or injury she must be sent home on the advice of a doctor
  • medical benefits of at least $50,000 for each accident or illness (i.e., the maximum set cannot be lower than $50,000)
  • at least 75% of covered medical expenses.
  • maximum deductible is $500 per accident or illness
  • waiting period for coverage of pre-existing conditions less than one year
  • must provide at least $7,500 in benefits to send remains to home country for burial
  • Covid19
  • combinable with a state health insurance (Marketplace coverage, Medicaid, CHIP, for example)
Best regards,
Gina

questionDear Gina,
Thanks for your inquiry! For a J2 Visa holder, you can use any of the Covid19 US visitors insurance plans. Not all student plans cover Covid-19 . Currently these plans are providing coverage for covid-19 for people who are visiting US and living in the US. Safe Travels USA plan from Trawick International: There are four Safe Travels USA plans. he plan called Safe Travels USA Comprehensive is the best plan for persons with pre-existing medical conditions even if over the age of 70. You can Compare all Safe Travels USA Insurance for US J2 visa holders and buy them by choosing the "buy now" button under the name of whichever plan you are interested.

Compare Safe Travels USA Insurance

Another option are plans offered by Global Underwriters. These plans are the Diplomat America (must buy for at least 15 days) or Diplomat LongTerm (must by for at least 90 days, but is renewable). Either plan can be refunded only if cancelled before the start date and will be subject to a $25 cancellation fee. However, these plans offer nice sports and adventure activity riders for an additional cost AND they cover covid-19 like any other illness. You can Compare the Diplomat Insurance for US J2 visa holders.

Compare Diplomat Insurance

There is another company that offers coverage in the US, Canada and Mexico, called INF. One of their plans (Elite) has excellent coverage of pre-existing medical conditions beyond the usual coverage for "acute onset" of pre-existing conditions which is a unique offering. You can compare their plans using this link and purchase the one you are interested in by choosing the "buy now" button for the appropriate plan: Please note you must purchase either 30 or 90 days of coverage with these plans the first time you buy them. The plans are either 80/20 plans (you pay 20%, plan pays 80% or fixed plans). You can Compare all available INF J2 visa insurance plans .

Compare inf insurance plan

The J2 visa holders can find the ideal Covid visitor medical insurance plan by using the Covid19 US visitor medical compare insurance tool. They should provide relevant information such as the age, the duration of travel and other relevant details like the medical maximum coverage, the deductible and the need for Covid US tourist insurance coverage. The comparison utility will display the available travel insurance plans based on the travelers requirements. Travelers can further filter the displayed plans by filtering the list of plans, and one of the filter option is specifically about coverage for Covid illness. The traveler can then review these filtered plans based on price and other coverage benefits to select the Covid19 US travelers insurance plan that they like best.

Do let us know if we can assist you further.

05. Coverage for J2 visa holder who is pregnant

questionHello there,
I am a 40-year-old J-1 visa scholar. I have a wife who is 38 years-old and has L-1A visa and her own health insurance via her employer now. However, she will leave the company on 3/31/2019 and is pregnant. Therefore, she will apply for a J-2 visa and subscribe to the health insurance which covers the period from 4/1/2019 to 9/30/2019. Could you make sure whether your plan meets the following conditions?

Required Coverage:

  • $100,000 USD per accident & illness in medical coverage.
  • Deductible cannot exceed $500 USD per accident or illness.
  • Coinsurance cannot exceed 25%.
  • Medical evacuation coverage must be at least $50,000 USD.
  • Repatriation coverage must be at least $25,000 USD.
  • Pre-existing conditions must be a covered benefit. The waiting period for benefit coverage cannot exceed 12 months.
Please note:Policys with coverage for only Acute onset of pre-existing conditions do not meet this requirement.
  • Carrier must be at least A-rated or backed by the full faith and credit of the Exchange Visitors government.
Thank you for your consideration. I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Akihiro Shimomura,

Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your J2 Visa health insurance needs!. We do have insurance to cover J1 visa holders. However, no visitor (or J visa) plan will cover pre-existing conditions and certainly not the wellness visits needed for a pregnancy and delivery. The best option that I can think of is to extend the coverage she has now through her employer. This is a right from the HIPAA law (not sure if it applies to non-US citizens, but you can give it a shot). It allows you to continue to purchase the same insurance plan; however, the employer may no longer pay any subsidy (and can charge you 10% fee) so the cost may be higher than she was paying previously. However, that way you can get a pregnancy covered that started under that plan. This is the only way that I can think of that she can have coverage for her pregnancy.

If that previous plan does not meet all the details of the J requirement (it may not have repatriation and emergency medical evacuation); we do offer a product that ONLY covers that component, so you would not have to pay much more to meet additional requirements. You can find information on that policy here:
Otherwise, you will have to pay out of pocket for all maternity costs for your wife and child. Most visitor policies will allow a child 14 days old to be added to the plan, but all care before that will also be out of pocket and plans generally do not cover wellness.
You can compare J visa coverage plans here, but note that they do not cover pre-existing conditions with no waiting period and they will ALL exclude a pregnancy that started before the start date of the policy.

06. Insurance for J2 Visa serving as secondary insurance

questionHi,
I am on J2 Visa. I needed an insurance plan for myself which is just the J2 and I want to know if I can use this insurance as the secondary plan after having my University's plan as the primary? Do these plans cover maternity and pregnancy?
Thank you,

questionDear Customer,
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your J2 Visa health insurance needs!. Here are the links for the policy we spoke about over the phone: The plan that is available for just the J2 visa without the J1 visa being on the plan: The Patriot Exchange insurance plan is offered by International Medical Group (IMG) and provides comprehensive insurance for international students (F1 visa) and J1 visa scholars in the USA. It satisfies J visa and most US university requirements and is hugely popular. It is also a policy which a J2 visa holder can purchase without the J1 visa holder as the primary insured. If there is a health center available, the insured only pays a $5 copay instead of the $100 deductible. This and many other benefits make it a very economical and excellent choice for J visa holders. The details of the plans are available on our site at the below link:

There is another plan "Student Health Advantage Platinum" that covers pregnancy. This plan needs the J1 to be the primary insured and the J2 to be the secondary insured on the same plan. This plan covers maternity and pregnancy after some waiting period. To get quote and BUY this plan, please visit the below link:
You can use any of the plans as the secondary plan but the "Patriot Exchange" plan does not cover maternity. "Student Health Advantage Platinum" plan covers maternity but the J1 holder must be on the same plan as J2 to buy this plan

08. Health insurance for wife on J2 visa

questionDear customer support,
I am a J1 visa holder and have my insurance through my university. However I need insurance for my wife who has a J2 visa. I have the following questions:

  • I am trying to purchase the Patriot Exchange plan, will that plan work for me?
  • Can I buy the policy for $50,000, or should I buy $100,000?
  • I will be buying the policy for one year. However, if my wife returns to my country before the end of one year, can I get a refund on this policy.
Thank you,
Nasresfahani

questionDear Mr Nasresfahani,
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your J2 Visa health insurance needs!. Here are the answers to your questions.
  • I am trying to purchase the Patriot Exchange plan, will that plan work for me?
Answer: Yes, this plan will work well for you. This is the one student insurance plan which is available to J2 visa holder even if the J1 visa holder has purchased a different insurance policy.
  • Can I buy the policy for $50,000, or should I buy $100,000?
Answer: The J visa insurance requirement mandated by the US immigration authorities insist on a minimum coverage of $100,000. This is true for both J1 and J2 visa holders, hence you have to buy a policy with a minimum of $100,000 to satisfy J visa regulation.
  • I will be buying the policy for one year. However, if my wife returns to my country before the end of one year, can I get a refund on this policy.
Answer: Yes, you will get a pro rata refund for the unused period of the insurance plan.

10. Health insurance for wife who is pregnant

questionDear Sir,
I am from india and I am going to USA (Ohio) on January 2016 with my wife, I will join as a postdoc researcher. Now my wife is pregnant 2 months. I have queries on health insurance, Can you help me, that whether the delivery cost is covered in health insurance or not. she will deliver baby on month of June-July 2016. I have J1 VISA.
Thank you
Santosh

questionDear Sir,
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your J2 Visa health insurance needs!. We sell insurance for visitors to the US and specifically for the J visa (J1 and J2); however, since your wife is already pregnant, no insurance will cover the wellness checks and birth of the child. We can help you find insurance to meet the visa requirements, bot that aspect of care will not be covered.
There is one plan we sell that covers complications of pregnancy in the first 26 weeks of gestation only. Obviously, it is insurance you hope you do not need. It also satisfies the J requirements (buy at least a $100,000 maximum plan; I recommend higher). I will put the information links for it below in case you are interested in it:

11. Insurance Coverage for maternity and child delivery

questionHi There,
I'm a j1 phd student. I'm trying to find the best insurance insurance option for my wife (j2 visa) which also cover maternity (from pregnancy to child delivery), at a reasonable price. We are both italian citizens and we are both already in the us. I was looking at the Student Health Advantage plan and was wondering how much would it cost. I need insurance only for J2.
Thanks a lot
Andrea

questionDear Andrea Rovinelli,
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your J2 Visa health insurance needs!.
Student Health Advantage is not suitable for your situation as you need insurance for only J2 and J1 is already covered.
We have a plan that is available only for J2 but this plan does not cover maternity and child delivery. You can opt for the global plans in IMG that will cover maternity and child birth.
Here are the details:

  • GLOBAL MEDICAL SILVER from IMG:      Plan Details

This plan is a long-term, fixed benefit medical insurance plan that may be renewed yearly. The plan provides Non-US citizens and US expatriates with excellent coverage outside their home country with a lifetime policy limit of $5,000,000.
  • GLOBAL MEDICAL GOLD from IMG:      Plan Details

This Insurance plan is a long-term, comprehensive benefit insurance plan designed for a traveler seeking major medical coverage for a limited amount of time. The plan provides comprehensive benefits for the initial three years of coverage after which some benefits are reduced. The plan has a lifetime policy limit of $5,000,000.
If you are not concerned about maternity and child birth, then we have a popular plan for J2 Visa holders only:

questionHello,
My sister is coming to US on J1 Visa. Her husband and baby are coming to US on J2 Visa. Her husband is 26 years old and the baby is 1 year old. Is there a plan that is available for her husband and child? My sister has a plan already.
Thanks for your time,

questionDear Liliana,

13. J2 visa medical coverage for child below 10 years

questionDear Sir/Madam,
I am a J1 visa holder, who got the A.S.P.E. health insurance and I would like to get insurance for my daughter (7 year-old) for the whole period and for my husband (41 years old) - starting with 3 months and then with add-on. However, I am not sure if I meet your following criteria "J2: applicant is only eligible for this plan if the J1 visa holder has purchased a plan through his or her education or cultural program". Do u have any other suggestion ?I'd like to Know more about having children for free.
Could you please clear that up, considering I have A.S.P.E.?
Yours faithfully,
Ana Nascimento

questionDear Ana,
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your J2 Visa health insurance needs!. I am guessing that as a J1 visa holder, you have medical coverage through your institution. If that is the case, then you can purchase the Patriot Exchange by IMG. Please note that you will not be able to change anything with the coverage such as "add on"

If you are purchasing the policy for different dates for your husband and child then in your case you are going to have to purchase separate policies for your husband and child (so no one will be free) since they have different travel dates. The best policy is probably the Patriot Exchange with no coinsurance payment (Atlas has a 20% coinsurance outside their PPO network - that is a group of hospitals/doctors they work with - or 0% in their network). It's up to you which you think will be best. The Atlas plan can be purchased for however many days you need while the Patriot Exchange must be purchased for whole months only.
Here is our information on the Atlas plan from WorldTrips for your reference:

14. Health insurance for J2 visa holders

questionHi,
I am on J1 Visa and my wife and daughter are on J2. I have the ASPE healthplan from the American University Washington DC. I need health insurance for my wife and daughter alone. I will be coming to Rockville, Maryland. Is there a suitable plan for my situation?
Thanks,
Oscar

questionDear Oscar,
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your J2 Visa health insurance needs!. Patriot Exchange plan from IMG is best suitable and is only plan that provides coverage for J2 visa alone when J1 visa has coverage available already from the University. The plan cannot be purchased while physically in Maryland, but the plan does provide coverage in Maryland and anywhere outside your home country. To buy this plan, you should buy it while outside Maryland and use your Non US mailing and billing address.

questionHi,
So I am going to the US for 1 year with my spouse. My insurance is covered within my program but we need to purchase an insurance for him as well for the J2 visa application. Can we do that with you?
I was looking into this Patriot Exchange option. I saw that it has all the minimum requirements but the application also mentions this:
The policy must, at minimum, be underwritten by an insurance corporation having at least one of the following:
A.M. Best rating of "A-" or above Insurance Solvency International, Ltd. (ISI) rating of "A-" or above Standard & Poor's claims-paying ability rating of "A-" or above Weiss Research, Inc. rating of "B+" or above and I didn't find anything about it. Can you please help me with this?

17. Buying J2 visa insurance separately

questionHi,
I am a J1 scholar and my institution is covering my medical insurance while I’m in the US. However, my spouse and child will be here with me and I need insurance for them. Can a J2 individual purchase insurance?
Thank you!

questionDear Customer,
Thank you for contacting us at American Visitor Insurance for your J2 Visa health insurance needs!. This is a relatively common situation for individuals with some institutions. Usually, the J1 scholar must be the primary insured on most policies. However, the Patriot Exchange plan offered by International Medical Group (IMG) will allow for the J2 spouse and/or dependents to purchase insurance under these circumstances. The Patriot Exchange is a very economical policy with many good benefits which I often recommend even to J1 scholars.
One advantage of the policy is that if the insured has access to a health center, they only pay a $5 copay (instead of the usual $100 deductible). As a copay, this is payable at EACH visit, however, even several visits will be cheaper than the $100 deductible. A disadvantage to the policy is that there is no maternity coverage and no coverage for pre-existing conditions. For a complete information on the policy, including brochure and pricing, please check these links.
